August 6, 2026
Anyone who has lived in Texarkana for more than a few years has watched the dining scene grow in fits and starts. A place opens on Richmond Road, another closes near the mall, a barbecue joint quietly changes hands. What is happening in 2026 feels different. The openings are not scattered across the city. They are landing, almost without exception, in two places: Walton Drive and the St. Michael–Mall Drive cluster off the Summerhill Road interchange.
For a mid-sized market with plenty of empty commercial pad sites elsewhere, that concentration is a choice, not an accident. It is also the thing worth paying attention to if you already live here and are trying to figure out where the weeknight dinner run is heading.
The story of 2026 is not that Texarkana got more restaurants. It is that the map is finally picking sides.
Four national and regional names have crossed the finish line since January, and two more are under construction. The openings are close enough together in time that most residents have not stitched them into one picture yet.
| Restaurant | Address | Opened |
|---|---|---|
| Jaggers | 2021 Mall Drive | February 2026 |
| Panera Bread | 4002 St. Michael Drive | February 26, 2026 |
| First Watch | 4002 St. Michael Drive | March 23, 2026 |
| Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen | Waggoner Creek area | Announced, under construction |
| Chuy's | Waggoner Creek area | Announced, adjacent to Cheddar's |
Jaggers, a fast-casual spinoff from the creators of Texas Roadhouse, opened at 2021 Mall Drive, directly next to Texas Roadhouse and on the site formerly occupied by Bryce's Cafeteria. The Bryce's detail matters. For a generation of Texarkana residents, that address was a Sunday-after-church destination, and its long vacancy was a small civic wound. The site being filled by a burger concept from the same ownership group as the Roadhouse next door is not a coincidence. It is a single operator building a two-restaurant anchor on one parcel.
Two miles north on St. Michael Drive, the old Texas Roadhouse building did something similar in reverse. Panera Bread held its grand opening on February 26, 2026, at 4002 St. Michael Drive, taking over the former Texas Roadhouse location on what the mayor described as a very high-traffic corridor. First Watch followed at the same 4002 St. Michael Drive address, opening March 23 and serving breakfast, brunch, and lunch from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. Two restaurants, one address, two different day-parts. That is unusual for Texarkana, where most pad sites still operate on the one-tenant-one-building model.
Walton Drive was already the quiet contender before this year. Blue Ember Smokehouse has been operating at 606 Walton Drive, next to Ashley Furniture and across from Lowe's, since early 2024, and it built the template the corridor is now running with: national-adjacent traffic counts, generous parking, and clean sight lines from the road.
The 2026 additions extend that logic. Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen has been announced for Walton Drive, with the deal brokered by Richard Reynolds, and the arrival lands the street a second sit-down chain after Blue Ember Smokehouse. Chuy's is expected to follow next door to Cheddar's, and the Texarkana Gazette confirmed in May 2026 that Waggoner Creek development continues, with Cheddar's and Chuy's both preparing to open.
What is worth flagging is the pattern. Chuy's, Cheddar's, and Blue Ember are not competing for the same table. A Tex-Mex chain, a comfort-food chain, and a scratch barbecue smokehouse form a full weeknight rotation rather than a three-way price war. That is the difference between a corridor that fills up and a corridor that eats itself.
St. Michael Drive is playing a different game. The Panera and First Watch pairing at 4002 St. Michael is aimed squarely at day-part gaps the city has actually had. Before this spring, a weekday breakfast that was not a fast-food drive-thru or a diner meant driving. Panera and First Watch both opening in early 2026 give the corridor a proper bakery-café and a breakfast-brunch operator for the first time.
Then there is Jaggers, which sits on Mall Drive a short drive south. It is fast food in structure, but the menu leans on made-from-scratch burgers, hand-breaded chicken tenders, fresh salads, and homespun milkshakes, which is a step up from the drive-thru options that dominated this stretch a year ago.
The result is a St. Michael–Mall Drive cluster that has quietly become the city's default for the everyday meals people actually eat during the week: breakfast, a quick lunch, a Tuesday-night burger. It is not glamorous. It is functional, and functional is exactly what the corridor was missing.
If you live near the Pleasant Grove Road and I-30 interchange, the next twelve months matter more to you than they do to anyone else in the city. Waggoner Creek development is continuing, and both Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen and Chuy's are in the pipeline. Cheddar's operates roughly 180 locations nationwide, most of them in Texas, so its arrival is not exotic, but for a Texarkana resident who has been driving to Longview to visit one, the math on a Friday night changes.
Two things worth watching:
The practical question for anyone already living here is which corridor to point the car toward on a Tuesday. Here is how the two shake out right now:
The mistake would be reading the 2026 openings as evidence that Texarkana is turning into a chain-restaurant city. It is not. What is happening is more specific. The chains are picking two streets and the independents are keeping the rest. Ten years from now, that split is the thing residents will remember about this year, not the individual ribbon cuttings.
A quick note for readers watching this from a real estate angle rather than a dinner-plans angle. Concentration of commercial tenants on two corridors tends to pull residential demand toward the adjacent neighborhoods, and it tends to leave the housing stock further from those corridors trading on different fundamentals. Pleasant Grove and the streets feeding into the Waggoner Creek development sit closest to the Walton Drive activity. The neighborhoods off Summerhill Road and Richmond Road sit closest to the St. Michael cluster. Neither shift is dramatic yet, and neither is a reason to make a decision this weekend. But the pattern is worth filing away.
